About the Project

BADEMS analyses how the agency of early modern maritime communities has been constructed in the past and is preserved in early modern linguistic heritage.

The project focuses on digital transcriptions and linguistic profiling within the datasets of 18th and 19th-century sailors’ logs and early maritime dictionaries. We map diachronic language variation, tracking how non-standard slang terms evolved across Atlantic trade routes.

Supported by the ICREA / Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, our interdisciplinary team integrates text processing, computational lexicography, and historical analysis.
